About Us

Who We Are – We are one of the most well established and successful Walking Clubs in the area. Our club is totally self-governing and independent and does not form part of any national organisation, and as a result of this our membership fees are very modest. Our success is based upon being a welcoming and friendly club whose members come from all walks of life. The provision of a full and varied walking programme, together with the occasional social event, summer coach trips and the annual walking holiday further ensure that the needs of our members are fully met.

Our Walks And Our Leaders – Members of the Club lead all of our walks and volunteer organisers for Sunday Walks and Wednesday Walks ensure that leaders are available and in place in order that there is a full and varied walking programme for members to enjoy throughout the year. Leaders will themselves choose the area in which they wish to take the group. They research and plan the walk prior to submitting it to the relevant organiser for inclusion in the forward walks programme. As in all areas of leading walks, help with selecting a suitable area is always available to new leaders who would like some assistance. In addition to this, more organised group training sessions sometimes take place which members can attend. Members will often share leading duties, so that two or even three people will jointly organise and lead the walk. Most walks will also involve ‘back markers’ to ensure that the group keeps together, therefore having two people involved from the outset can be very useful. Once the walk leader has checked and is satisfied with their route they will submit the walk details, including a brief description, to the Programme Secretary for inclusion in the monthly programme which is then circulated to all members and posted in the “Members Area” of this site.

Help And Assistance – The Club has a significant number of very experienced leaders who are happy to help and assist those members who wish to acquire new skills in the use of map and compass and in leading groups. Members are encouraged to lead walks, but it can be quite a daunting prospect leading a walk for the first time. However, there is always plenty of assistance available to those who are new to the task and would like some support. Many members enjoy the experience of leading and often there will be over 50 different leaders of walks in a given year. It can be very satisfying knowing that you have provided an enjoyable day out in the countryside for your fellow Club members. Please visit the walks and membership sections of this site to see how you can become involved.

Transport – Transport to and back from walks can at times be provided in member’s cars and this service is chargeable. This transport charge differs according to where the walk is taking place and the transport charge for each walk is detailed in the monthly programme of walks. Please note that the provision of transport is not guaranteed.

Coach Trips – During the summer months we also organise day Coach Trips which enable us to walk in areas such as Snowdonia, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, places where we would not normally travel to on the regular walking days. The Club also has an annual and longer walking holiday which gives the members access to walking areas even further afield such as Scotland, Exmoor, Dartmoor the North Yorkshire Moors etc.

Social – Although we are first and foremost a Walking Club, we do also have the occasional social event for our members to enjoy and the details of any such event can be found in the relevant monthly circular.
